Overview
Two interdisciplinary courses, Emergency Preparedness and Bioterrorism Awareness for Health Professionals and Emergency and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response for Health Professionals, have been developed and are offered winter and spring quarters, respectively. Health Sciences students learn about preparedness and response through lectures, panels, a Web-based discussion board, and completion of a final project. The two courses are requirements for the Certificate in Emergency Preparedness and Response, also offered through this program.
Emergency Preparedness and Bioterrorism Awareness for Health Professionals (UCONJ 445)
The course is designed to:
- Enhance recognition of injury or illness arising as a result of public health emergencies, including exposure to selected biological and chemical agents
- Provide training in the timely reporting and activation of health care systems in response to public health emergencies
- Emphasize the importance of a coordinated interdisciplinary response to public health emergencies, including suspected bioterrorism events

Emergency and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response for Health Professionals (UCONJ 446)
This course is designed to:
- Describe clinical practice and public health approaches that allow health providers to safely meet the acute care needs of victims of a bioterrorism event or other public health emergency
- Emphasize local, state, and federal planning and policy issues and their relevance to health care professionals
- Highlight the importance of a coordinated interdisciplinary response
- Describe the policy and legal implications of a potential bioterrorism event or other public health emergency
