Indian Health Service

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the federal agency that oversees the Indian Health Care system. It operates clinics and other facilities to provide direct patient care, advocates for the health of AI/ANs within the federal government, and provides funding to tribal health services managed by tribes, including Urban Indian Health Programs. Located administratively within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the IHS operates through 12 regional offices throughout the country.

Alaska

Alaska is primarily serviced through contracts and a compact with Tribal Health Organizations (THOs). 99% of the Alaska area budget is allocated to THOs who operate under the authority of Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, Public Law 93-368, as amended. 28
