Syndromic surveillance provides public health officials with a timely and practical way of measuring the severity of health events and can inform potential responses. This month’s Hot Topics In Practice will explore a partnership between the Alaska Department of Health and the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium’s Alaska Native Epidemiology Center to implement syndromic surveillance across the Alaska Tribal Health Systems (ATHS).
The June session of Hot Topics in Practice will explore the role of syndromic surveillance within Alaska’s Tribal Health System (ATHS). Syndromic data can be used as an early detection and warning system for public health concerns, such as flu outbreaks, opioid overdoses, infections, and natural disasters. This presentation will draw upon data derived from a partnership between the Alaska Department of Health and the Alaska Native Epidemiology Center, and will explore the various ways syndromic data are being used to serve Tribal Health Organizations across the state and to improve the state’s overall syndromic surveillance program.
The State of Alaska has 229 federally recognized tribes living across nearly 600,000 square miles of often road-less land. In most areas, Tribal Health Organizations are the only healthcare options available. This complex, diverse and multifaceted healthcare system is known as the Alaska Tribal Health System (ATHS) and serves more than 20% of the state’s population.
During this hour-long webinar, Anna Frick and Lowrie Ward will present syndromic surveillance data gathered from a partnership between the Alaska Department of Health and the Alaska Native Epidemiology Center. Anna and Lowrie will explore the uniqueness of the ATHS and the various ways that syndromic data are being used to strengthen the state’s syndromic surveillance program while serving Tribal Health Organization partners.
