Former Leadership Institute scholar, Shawn Morris
Shawn Morris, ND, was working as the Community Health Manager for Island County, WA, when he heard about the Northwest Public Health & Primary Care Leadership Institute.
“I kept hearing great things about the Leadership Institute,” Shawn said. “I was interested because I wanted to develop skills in strategic planning, change management, policy, and other core leadership areas.”
Shawn enrolled in the program in the spring of 2023, and within weeks of starting was promoted to Public Health Director for Island County. “It was really great timing, because I started this new position and was able to apply the Institute's teachings instantaneously.”
“The program was a great experience for me, and I appreciated the opportunity to learn directly from knowledgeable leaders.” Shawn especially enjoyed the program’s emphasis on collaborative learning. “I found it very helpful to think through public health challenges in a small group setting. This was a great opportunity to get to know my peers from across the region. They brought unique perspectives to the cohort, and I learned a lot by working through problems together.”
When asked about specific ways he’s applied the program’s teachings in his work, Shawn had an immediate response. “So many of the problems we’re dealing with in public health are ones that don’t have a clear, linear solution. This program helped me become a more adaptive, responsive leader who can approach challenges strategically, with a collaborative, systems mindset.”
“I’ve drawn on what I learned in the program to develop a strategic vision for our department, while expanding partnerships with primary care, creating stronger local relationships. We’re implementing a strategic plan that supports long term health improvement for community and environmental health.”
Shawn also highlighted the program’s emphasis on DEI principles. “The workshops and seminars strengthened my understanding of DEI practices, supporting the development of inclusive, community-centered policies and programs. It was eye-opening to learn how structures of supremacy can impact organizations and health systems.”
Shawn had some words of advice for anyone who might be considering the Leadership Institute. “This program is an amazing opportunity if you’re looking to develop core capacities for leadership. If you work in public health or primary care, the Institute will provide you with the essential skills and practical tools to succeed.”
